Overview

Climate change is a global existential threat that requires urgent, collective, and coordinated action

The Skoll Foundation supports social innovations that mitigate climate change, influence private sector action, advance climate justice in partnership with the hardest-hit communities, and build strong support for climate action globally.

Stop Deforestation with IPLC Guardianship

We invested in Rights and Resources Initiative, a global coalition dedicated to advancing the land and resource rights of local peoples—informed and driven by Indigenous Peoples, people of African descent, and local communities themselves. It has supported a coalition in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2012 to help influence major policy reform at the national level, which is expected to result in a new land law by the end of 2022.

Our grantee Tenure Facility works to secure land and forest rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLC) by funding projects that drive development, reduce conflict, improve global human rights, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. It will expand to protect up to 50 million hectares of land across Amazonia, the Congo Basin, and tropical Asia over the next five years, benefiting 15 million people and preventing the release of 140 metric tons of carbon over a decade.

Increased Economic Value of Sustainably Managed Forests

Alliance of Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago, (AMAN), represents over 2,000 Indigenous communities in Indonesia to facilitate collective action, community mapping, and rehabilitation of degraded land.

Its “homecoming movement” calls on Indigenous youth in cities to return to their homelands to protect and manage their territories. During the pandemic, the movement has established 82 youth-led Indigenous Schools and 118 enterprises, including 30 organic farming collectives.

Building a U.S. Permanent Majority

In March 2022, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission introduced a draft rule requiring U.S. public companies to assess and disclose companies’ climate risk and impact to investors, citing Skoll Awardee Ceres.

Their coalitions mobilized support from investors with $52 trillion in assets and are now mobilizing against opposition to draft rule.
