Biography

Beth is the Managing Director of the Slum Dwellers International's Secretariat. (SDI). SDI is an internationally recognised network of slum dwellers across cities in the Global South representing the needs, interests and voice of the world’s urban poor.

Early in her career as an urban planner in Zimbabwe, Beth was disillusioned by city planning that failed to provide for the the urban poor and criminalised slums and informal settlements often leading to state sponsored violent evictions. She founded the NGO, Dialogue on Shelter that subsequently worked with the Zimbabwe Homeless People's Federation. Dialogue on Shelter and the Zimbabwe Federation supported the growth of mobilised urban poor communities in Zambia, Malawi and Botswana.

At the SDI Secretariat Beth leads a professional team tasked with organising and managing SDI's global programmes. Beth is a trained urban planner and a PhD in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester.
