Nick was born in India 61 years ago, raised in Singapore, educated in England, set up a small enterprise in London in 1978, worked in West Africa in 1980, and has lived in Kenya since 1982, working for social justice and development. In 2002 he graduated as MBA from Durham University Business School.
He is co-founder of the multi award-winning social enterprise KickStart International, (www.kickstart.org), listed in 2012 by Forbes Magazine as one of the world’s Top 30 Social Enterprises, and by the Global Journal as one of the Top 100 NGOs. KickStart develops value-adding technologies for people at the ‘Base of the Pyramid’ - smallholder farmers - in Sub Saharan Africa, and develops the market channels that ensure the last mile delivery of these solutions to the people who need them. KickStart has enabled hundreds of thousands of very poor farmers in Sub Saharan Africa to transform from subsistence to business, escaping poverty through enterprise. Nick and co-founder Martin Fisher have received many awards for their work including the Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur award in 2003 and the Skoll Award for Social Enterprise in 2004.
Nick is now active as Executive Chairman of Wanda Organic (www.wandaorganic.com) a young and ambitious social enterprise, founded by his daughter Marion Atieno, which offers the latest bio-organic soil and plant health solutions to African farmers. He is also Board Chair of ONGOZA (www.ongozayouth.org), a peace building and job creation initiative serving African youth through promotion of entrepreneurship. He also promotes the performing arts in Kenya with the Nairobi Theatre Company and supports his wife Rose Ayuma to run a children’s home (www.vumilia.org) for orphaned and vulnerable girl children in Western Kenya.
