The ubiquity of new and open data sets offer the promise of boosting impact and exponentially scaling the work of social entrepreneurs. These massive datasets could help identify effective interventions to combat structural poverty, better target health services to the needy, and predict educational outcomes for the underserved. However, data alone is insufficient; to unlock the power of these new datasets, a combination of skills in computer programming, statistics, machine learning, data visualization, and software design is critical.
For the past five years, DataKind has partnered with 250 social sector organizations to leverage machine learning and predictive technology to take advantage of this powerful moment and catalyze progress against critical humanitarian problems. We’ve used satellite imagery to detect crop disease to give farmers time to intervene and protect their livelihood; forecasted water demand to improve pricing, expand conservation programs and increase the efficiency of water transportation during a drought in California; and predicted where fires were most likely occur so the Red Cross should prioritize smoke alarm installation to save lives.
Join DataKind Founder and Executive Director Jake Porway as he discusses the awesome power of data and predictive technology, and how it can help organizations become faster, leaner, and have more impact, resulting in an expedited change in the social sector. Jake will share examples of how organizations on the front lines of social impact have leveraged advanced data technologies and machine learning to catalyze their work. Jake will also explore pressing ethical questions and concerns raised by this new technology.
We are only beginning to realize the art of the possible of machine learning and data, and we invite you to help us engage with the potentials and pitfalls of this new technology.
