Session Description

Grab a portable lunch and join peer-to-peer lunchtime discussions of subjects suggested by fellow Skoll World Forum delegates. Discussions begin at 11:45am.

Over the last decade-plus, local newspapers and broadcast tv and radio stations have been fighting to survive in an environment of increasing consumer media choices and declining funding.   • Partner, Bridges Fund Management
    At Bridges Fund Management, Clara takes the lead on the fund’s Impact strategy throughout the investment cycle – from defining the strategy and process for selecting impact investments, to engaging with portfolio companies to create additional value through environmental and social factors, to tracking and reporting results to investors and other stakeholders. In addition to growing impact through our own funds, Clara leads Impact+, Bridges’ advisory efforts to promote the growth of the wider sustainable and impact investment sector. Prior to Bridges, Clara focused her career on investing in innovative high-impact businesses – most recently on the management team of AyurVAID Hospitals, an India-based healthcare chain and Acumen Fund portfolio company. Clara previously worked for Acumen Fund’s Capital Markets team in New York where she played a lead role in designing an innovative investment vehicle and later co-led the Acumen energy portfolio in India. Before Acumen, Clara worked in Bogota, promoting socially responsible investment. Clara holds a BA (Hons) in Greats from Oxford University and an MBA from INSEAD.
  • Founder and President, Pat Mitchell Media
    Pat Mitchell is known for her leadership in the media industry as a CEO, producer and curator. Her career has focused on using media as a force for social change, with an emphasis on the representation of women’s stories. Ms. Mitchell is the former president of CNN Productions, where she executive produced programs that have received 35 Emmy Awards and five Peabody Awards. In 2000, she became the first woman president and CEO of PBS. Mitchell also served as president and CEO of the Paley Center for Media. In 2011, Ms. Mitchell partnered with TEDTalks to co-curate the TEDWomen global conference, which will be held this year New Orleans on November 1st – 3rd. Ms. Mitchell is especially proud to have been recognized by The Women’s Media Center with its first Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is given annually to other women for advancing women through media. She also advises foundations and corporations on women’s empowerment issues and leadership development as well as media relations and governance. She is the chair of the Jordan River Foundation US Board, the Women’s Media Center and the Sundance Institute boards, a founding board member of V-Day, a member of the board of the Acumen Fund, the Skoll Foundation, Participant Media, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia, Mitchell holds bachelor's and master's degrees in English literature. She has taught at the University of Georgia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.
  • Chief, Applied Innovation & Acceleration, US Global Development Lab
    Alexis Bonnell is the Division Chief of Applied Innovation and Acceleration in the U.S. Global Development Lab of USAID. Over her career, Alexis has developed and delivered billions of dollars of humanitarian and development programming in over 25 conflict, post-conflict, and emergency countries, in almost every sector from education to stabilization, for more than 30 International Bi-lateral donors, 10 UN agencies, the military, and private sector. She has held positions with every side of development including: implementers, donors, policy makers, and beneficiaries and is proud of her “360 degrees” of development experience. Her more than 20 years of experience in management and communications has provided her incredible opportunities to work on/with: Wall Street, “Dot.coms”, Middle East Peace Plan, Afghan and Iraq Elections, global emergency response coordination and major logistics operations. Her focus at the Lab is to help convene and connect people and organizations around the world with the most innovative applications of science, technology, innovation, and partnership to accelerate the end to extreme poverty. Alexis is leading the team to champion science and innovation into action, and most recently created the new Global Innovation Exchange, a industry level platform to share all globally relevant development R&D & innovation. Alexis is also the co-author of “Get Your Dream Job”.
  • Senior Research, Imazon
    Beto Veríssimo is a senior research and co-founder of Imazon, a think-and-do tank NGO based in the Brazilian Amazon founded in 1990. He holds a master degree in Ecology from The Pennsylvania State University (USA) and graduate degree in Agriculture Engineer from the Federal Rural University of the Brazilian Amazon. He has published more than 170 scientific and technical articles and 25 books on conservation, natural resources management and public policies. His work has helped created about 25 million hectares of Conservation Units in the Brazilian Amazon and support forest management for more than 7 million hectares. In the last years he has work on different strategies to reduce the level of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. He is also AVINA Fellow and Ashoka Senior Fellow. In 2010 Veríssimo received the Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2015 he received the Globo Newspaper Brazilian Award on sustainability.
  • CEO, Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation
    JIM BILDNER is the Chief Executive Officer of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation where he focuses on investing in nonprofits and social enterprises that are working to solve complex issues including systemic poverty, environmental and conservation issues, food insecurity, access to healthcare, homelessness, community development and second generation strategies to address these issues. Jim is also an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and a Senior Research Fellow at the Hauser Institute for Civil Society and the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University. At the Kennedy School, his research interests include understanding the role of private capital in solving public problems, extending the capacity of foundations to solve complex societal issues and the sustainability of public and private systems when governments disinvest in these systems.   Among his board affiliations, he is a trustee of The Kresge Foundation, The Non Profit Finance Fund, Case Western Reserve University, The Public Citizen Foundation, the Health Foundation for the Americas, the Women’s Funding Network, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, The Newport Festivals Foundation, The Lizard Island Research Foundation in Australia, an Overseer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a member of the executive board of WBUR (Boston Public Radio) and an Overseer of WGBH Public TV and Radio. He also serves on the boards of Fox Islands Wind, LLC, the EBSF Loan Fund, the Island Institute and Coastal Innovation Loan Fund, Education SuperHighway, Service Year,, Sirum, Open Biome, Earth Genome, Open Up Resources and The Ground Truth Project. He is a member of YPO and the Chief Executives Organization.   In his board service, Mr. Bildner serves on the Investment Committees of boards with aggregate endowments in excess of $4.5B as well as a member of more then ten finance, investment and/or audit committees of these boards.

    Paul Rice is the founder, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA, the leading certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States. Since launching the Fair Trade Certified label in 1998, Paul has pushed to innovate and mainstream the Fair Trade movement to improve the lives of farmers and workers around the world. Partnering with over 1,100 U.S. and global companies, Fair Trade USA is rapidly expanding in both food and manufactured products, building more transparent, sustainable supply chains that create shared value for industry, farmers, workers and the planet. With 58% consumer awareness of its label, Fair Trade has generated over $400 million in additional revenue for low-income farming and working families in 70 countries across the globe – helping them put food on the table, keep their kids in school and invest in the future. Paul and his team recently launched Fair Trade for All, an innovative strategy for taking the movement to scale, and announced a $25 million capital campaign to fund the strategy. Paul has been honored for his pioneering work by the World Economic Forum, Clinton Global Initiative, Skoll Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, Ashoka and Fast Company magazine. Paul’s dedication to improving the lives of farming and working families is rooted in 11 years of field work in Nicaragua, where he founded the country’s first Fair Trade, organic coffee export cooperative. Paul holds a BA from Yale University and an MBA from Berkeley-Haas.

    Shai Reshef is President of University of the People (UoPeople) – the world’s first non-profit, tuition-free, accredited American online university, which is dedicated to opening access to higher education globally. President Reshef is an educational entrepreneur, with over 25 years of experience in the international education market. President Reshef has been widely recognized for his work with UoPeople, including being named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business; selected by OneWorld as one of its ‘People of 2009'; awarded an Ashoka fellowship; joined UN-GAID as a High-level Adviser; granted membership in the Clinton Global Initiative; granted an RSA Fellowship; selected by The Huffington Post as the Ultimate Game Changer in Education; nominated as one of Wired Magazine’s 50 People Changing the World; and selected as a Top Global Thinker by Foreign Policy Magazine. Recently, he was awarded the Prince’s Prize for Innovative Philanthropy by Prince Albert II of Monaco. Before founding University of the People, Reshef directed KIT e-learning, the first online university in Europe.   • Senior Advisor, Social Ventures, Mercy Corps
    Tim brings over a decade of experience developing market-based solutions that endeavor to address major social inequalities. He is the Senior Advisor to Mercy Corps' Social Ventures Fund, which invests equity and debt capital in seed stage, for-profit social businesses. Since its inception in mid-2015, the Social Venture Fund has closed seven investments in Indonesia, Nepal, Kenya and Colombia. More information on our fund and portfolio is available here: Tim has co-founded and led social ventures in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, including Joma Bakery Cafe, Hagar Social Enterprise Group and Artillery Group. Tim has also advised impact investment funds and social businesses in Southern Africa, East Africa and Southeast Asia. He currently holds board positions on Joma International, Vasham, Artillery Group, and Hagar International. Tim is currently based in Bogota, Colombia and manages Mercy Corps' investment portfolio across Southeast Asia and Latin America. Tim obtained his BBA from the University of Notre Dame.

Alexis has over 15 years of experience starting and growing global Internet companies. He served as Chief Revenue Officer at Vinted, a social/mobile peer-to-peer clothing marketplace, Executive in Residence at Accel Partners, a leading venture capital firm, SVP at HomeAway, the world's leading online marketplace for the vacation rental industry, GM at and head of Business Development at eBay Europe. In addition, Alexis was the founder and CEO of Fotango, an online photo business acquired by Canon. Prior to joining Tendrel, Alexis was Entrepreneur in Residence at the Skoll Global Threats Fund, leveraging mobile technology and crowd participation to help prevent pandemics. Alexis started his career in manufacturing, working for Alcatel's optical fiber cable division in France and China. Alexis holds mechanical and industrial engineering degree from ICAM in France and an MBA from Stanford University. In his off time, Alexis can be found coaching a ski team, kiteboarding, advising early-stage internet companies or simply baking bread for his 4 children.
