Biography

Stephen MacMahon is a founder and Principal Director of The George Institute for Global Health. This not-for-profit medical research institute has centres in China, India, Australia and the UK and operations in 50 countries worldwide. The mission of The George is to find sustainable solutions to the major health challenges facing emerging markets. Its portfolio includes a global R&D programme as well as an emerging markets-focused social enterprise programme. The results of its work have changed healthcare policy and practice worldwide, and for the last 3 years The George has been ranked among the top 10 research institutions worldwide on the basis of impact and efficiency. Stephen is Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Sydney. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) and the British Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci). In 2013, he was named EY Australian Social Entrepreneur of the Year.
